Hello my name is jasmin, and I’m working on getting my ged. I just need some advice on how you think I can better myself in the mathmatics field. I used to be able to understand it fully, but now it’s like it goes in one ear and out the other. So I was wondering is you have any tricks to help me with understanding math a little better, as far as algerbra and geometry?

Hola, Jasmine! Well, my special area is reading. And I would definitely say, you should check out Curtis’s blog… he’s got a lot of help for GED math. But I do have some suggestions.

First, math is a step-by-step process. Think of it like building a tower. The higher floors all depend on the base. That means, you need to really know the basic math and the foundations first. If you’re having trouble, try taking a step back to a more basic idea, to build up your background knowledge.

Also–math is about doing but also about understanding. You’re learning a way to solve puzzles and problems. So, always ask yourself–why is the math done this way? Why is this thing true? It’s a lot easier to remember something if you know the ‘why’ of it, than just trying to remember it. Like math formulas. If you know why they’re true, you can remember how to do them.

Now the doing part… practice really helps with math. Here’s a good way to practice. Take a practice problem and write it down. Then, do each step. But don’t just do it. Write down why you’re doing it. This is just like my advice for taking notes or studying other stuff… you’re actively learning. Write yourself instructions for solving the problem as you go. This will help you get the way to solve it “set” in your mind. Here’s an example of what I would do:

The reason this helps is because writing down the steps you’re doing helps you think through the problem and remembering it. If you have someone who can study with you, explaining the problem and how you’re doing it to them can help, too. You’ll learn faster and remember better.

For more math help, check out Curtis’s blog. And let me know how you’re doing!

Hola! I was talking with a friend of mine who is from Mexico, and came to the U.S. about four years ago. He was looking for some information online, and he was using Google. Then, I saw instead of just searching for words, he was searching Google Images. I asked him about it. Because he’s not so good with English yet, he says it’s easier to look at the pictures sometimes to find what he’s looking for. It got me to think about it… pictures are a big help when you’re trying to read better. If you can use pictures to help you find what you need, it can help a lot. And, pictures can help you study.

If I look for information on atoms on Google, here’s what I see:

If I have trouble reading the text, does it help me? Not too much. But if I click on “image” at the top of the page, I see pictures, and I can choose the one that looks most helpful. If I want something simple, I look for something easy to understand.

And looking at the picture and understanding it will help me read the website, too. And that improves my reading skills.

Here’s another thing you can do with Google. Say you don’t know a word, or don’t know how to spell it. Put your best guess into Google. Google will probably tell you the right way to spell it and show you where to get information about what it means.

So those are two ways to use Google to help you read, write, and study better… what do you think? Do you have other ideas?

What is the trick for one to do well in the reading part of GED?

So, I’ve got a few suggestions to help you do well in reading for the GED… by the way, some of these also help for the science and social studies tests, because being able to answer the questions has a lot to do with how well you can understand the reading.

Well, I think the best thing you can do is practice reading… read more! Read anything that you enjoy: books, newspapers, magazines, the Internet, anything that you’re interested in and that you like. That will help you improve your reading skill. But there are other things that you can do to do better on the GED test.

Read the questions and the answer choices first when you take the GED test. The questions will give you an idea of what you’re looking for in the reading. That can help a lot.

Practice skimming and scanning. Here’s a couple of my blog posts about it: Skimming and Scanning for the GED Test and GED practice question answer using skimming and scanning. Skimming and scanning help you find information faster in a passage of text.

Learn ways to figure out words that you don’t know when you take the test. Here is one of my blog posts about that: GED Vocabulary…Understanding Words on the GED Test.

Learn to look at the important parts of a reading to find main ideas.

Look at the beginning and end sentences of paragraphs. A lot of the time, they tell the main idea.

Look at the end of poems or stories… a lot of time the main point is at the end.

Look at the title of a reading. It can tell you what it’s all about!

The other thing is that you need to understand a little bit about stories, plays, and poems. That can be a little hard. It’s a good idea to try to think about how what people say and do can help you understand what people are like. If someone ignores their friend, maybe they are mean or selfish or just don’t want to listen to what their friend is saying. And, they’ll be likely to do the same thing another time. I haven’t written a blog post about questions about characters on the GED, so maybe I should do that next time. So, look for a new blog in the next couple of weeks about how to answer questions about characters in stories, plays, and poems on the GED test.

¡Hola! I called this blog GED Ahora, because I think it’s important to make the GED a priority, to say you’re getting it right now! If you don’t start to get your GED now, will you ever? It’s so easy to put things off…

The GED is the future, and if you don’t plan your future, who knows where you’ll end up? I mean, I never thought I’d be 22 years old and a single mom with a little boy. It seems like I didn’t think about anything when I was younger and dropped out of school. I didn’t protect myself from getting pregnant. I didn’t pick a very good daddy for my Roberto. I didn’t think about how I’d pay for school and clothes and food.

Don’t get me wrong. I love Roberto. He’s the joy of my life, and I thank God for him all the time. But that’s why I’ve got to start making good choices and planning for the future. I need to be the grownup mom, now.

I decided, I’m going to be a nurse. That way, I can help people, and I can support myself and Roberto. Good plan, right? But I’ve got to start by getting my GED. Now! ¡Ahora!

I put this blog together to help me keep on track, and to talk about getting your GED and getting your life together. I’ll keep posting what I’m doing, and hopefully everyone will get good information and get inspired to get their GED, too. No matter who you are, you can do it!
