GED Writing: Practicing Good Writing

posted in GED Writing, Writing Tips |

Hey everyone, Liz here. Life sure can get hectic sometimes, can’t it? I been so busy at work lately. We’ve been understaffed, so I been working overtime. It’s nice to have the extra money, but I don’t know if it’s worth it, workin’ up to 60 hour weeks sometimes.

Writing’s a good way to let off steam. I been keeping a journal so I can get some things off my chest when I get outta work. Sometimes, I just wanna write how I wanna write, like not care about good grammar and spelling and all that. But I know that if I do that, it’ll effect my regular writing too. It’s all about how you practice. If you practice writin’ bad, then when it comes time for the GED, you’re just gonna write bad. You can even know all the rules and stuff, but it’s how you write everyday that makes the difference.

I been gettin’ some comments on my blog that are a good example. Like, people will say, “hey liz can u help me wit riting?” and the first thing I have to say is that they need to practice good writing all the time! Even when they’re just commenting on an internet blog, or forum, or a youtube post or something. It really matters. Make sure to capitalize, use periods and commas, and spell words correctly. Then when it comes time for the GED test, you won’t end up missing anything simply ’cause you’re in the habit of writing slang, or not worrying about caps and periods.

    Sally,

Here’s a link to some good examples. I noticed that there were some words you misspelled in your message, such as “taken” and “writing.” That can dock you down points too. What would help you to learn how to spell things better is to pay attention to the red dotted lines that appear under words when you spell them wrong in many different applications. This blog does it, and a lot of forums and other internet commentary sites do too. When you see the red dotted line, try to figure out yourself the correct way of spelling it. That’s the best way I’ve found to remember all those little spelling rules.

Hello guys, I took my GED exams last year 2009. I took it twice, though. I didn’t pass the first try. About the essay I thought that I wouldn’t able to pass it and I’m worried about it. But it ended up essay was the highest score among all the subjects. But still I want to continue to learn English for me to get better in writing and in communicating. Still working on it.

I’m taking the Ged, Reading and Writing test on Tuesday and Wednesday. My problem is i’m having a menthol block putting words on a paper. I can’t come up with any Idea for any essay topic..I was told since I made a 480 on my pretest, I shouldn’t worry, but I’m really scared of failing the test..Do you have any suggestion for me to try?

    Hi Claudette,

I wrote a blog about this. Check it out here: http://www.passged.com/student_blogs/elizabeth/2008/12/09/ged-essay-brain-freeze-on-essay-topics/

The biggest thing is to not stress out about it. If you got a good score on your practice test, then that should be encouragement! Read my previous post to see if that helps.

The essay topic was on a problem you have and how you solve it. In my introduction I talked about me not able to learn when i was in school. My body topic was on the three things I list in my thesis ,which is I went back to school to get my ged, second I apply myself, third I studied and how I was able to learn conclusion rephrase the thesis.

It sounds like you did good job coming up with ideas for the essay! Though for the conclusion, did you just rephrase the thesis, or did you add new information? It’s important to have something new in the conclusion, like something you discovered as a result of writing the body.

Otherwise, it sounds like you did pretty well. Keep us updated when you get your score!
