GED Writing Exam Question

posted in GED Essay |

Liz, I’m curious if you write about something you come up with or what the testers come up with? Thanks, Byron

Byron,

Thanks for writing! That’s a great question. The GED test gives you a topic to write about. It will look something like:

Events from our childhood shape who we are as adults.

Choose a childhood event that has influenced you in your adulthood. Write an essay describing the event and how it has influenced you. Use your personal observations, experience, and knowledge to support your essay.

The GED essay exam prompt might ask you about your goals, important people or events in your life, or what you think about a quotation or issue. So, it will be asking about something you know… your goals, opinions, ideas, or life. That’s because the GED essay is about how well you write, not about knowing something specific. It will always ask you to use “personal observations, experience, and knowledge” … that is, use what you know!

Even though you won’t know the question in advance, I think it’s a good idea to have in mind some important people you admire (in your life, or famous people), some events in your life and the world that you think are important, and some ideas about your future (goals, etc.) If you’ve thought about some of these things, you can probably be ready to write more quickly.

Let me know if you have any more questions!

Liz
