Serious GED Science…Water Is Weird (Plus GED Practice Question)

Ever think about water? Okay, okay, you’re thinking about your GED, not about water. But water is killer weird, dude. Like, it’s this stuff that’s all over the place… and even inside your body, dude! And it CHANGES… yeah, you boil it an’ what happens? you get STEAM, that’s a gas… and in the winter it freezes and becomes solid ICE… and then usually it’s like just WATER man, that’s a liquid. So it’s three different kinds of matter. (Hey, dudes, this stuff’s on the GED test!!)

That’s right. Matter is different at different temperatures. So water, when it’s hot, is a gas (steam). Water when it’s cold is a solid (ice). The other times, in between, water is a liquid (water). Weird how things change, right? That’s totally science, dudes.

One of the things on the science test is a lot of charts. So, there’s a kind of chart of when stuff becomes solid, liquid or gas, called a phase diagram. And here’s a kewl phase diagram!

So, here’s your GED practice question….

At high altitudes, where the air pressure is lower, water boils at:

1) 100 degrees Celcius

2) 0 degrees Celcius

3) a lower temperature than normal

4) a higher temperature than normal

5) none of the above

So, what do you think? Do you get it? Next time, I’ll let you know the answer….
