Weird GED Science!!!!
Okay. Bored with GED stuff? Well, learning science for the GED don’t gotta be boring! This won’t be on the test… but it can teach you real GED science. Ready? Don’t it seem like your paycheck just goes up in smoke every week? Well… science can show you how to BURN MONEY without BURNING IT!
Kewl, right? Here’s a link to see someone actually doin’ it…

So, where’s the science behind it? Well, it’s all about what makes stuff burn. Alcohol burns pretty good, right? You don’t need a lot of heat to start that alcohol on fire. And so, when it burns, the water doesn’t get hot enough to turn into steam… the wet bill don’t catch on fire, cuz it’s too wet.
See, it takes three things to make something burn. You gotta have fuel…somethin’ to burn. You gotta have air… the oxygen in air combines with the molecules in whatever’s burning to make NEW STUFF (like ashes, smoke, carbon dioxide)…and you gotta have heat, to start it off. Water’s not good fuel, cuz it turns into steam when you add heat to it instead of making flames. So, the heat sets off the alcohol, and the alcohol don’t burn hot enough to make the water into steam… and the water keeps the dollar cool… and it just never gets hot enough to burn!
So, here’s a GED practice question for you. The experiment is, you soak a dollar in alcohol and water. Then you add heat. The alcohol burns, but the dollar and water don’t burn. If you did the experiment in a vacuum (no air!), what would happen?
Would the dollar bill burn?
Would the alcohol burn?
What would happen to the water?
What do you think?
