It measured 6.3 on the Richter scale of earthquakes, and that’s really high. Hundreds of people died, and they’re still looking to find out how many people are hurt and killed, not to mention all the building that got ruined.

So, it made me think. Earthquakes are part of science, there’s the whole science of how the top layer of the earth shifts, causing earthquakes. And where it shifts is called “fault lines,” where two plates of the earth meet. There’s a fault line running right down the center of Italy.

But earthquakes are also part of social studies. They’re part of geography, which is all about how the physical nature of the world…mountains, lakes, rivers, oceans, deserts, and everything around us…affects how people live and how society changes. So, here are some earthquake social studies questions to think about:

  • Why do people live in areas where there are a lot of earthquakes?
  • What do people do to protect themselves from earthquakes? What do governments do to protect people from earthquakes?
  • What is the government’s responsibility when there’s an earthquake? Why?
  • How does an earthquake in Italy affect other nations and people around the world?

What do you think? Can you research earthquakes and how they affect society and people’s lives? What’s your analysis of how earthquakes affect people?

Thanks for Reading My Blog! http://www.passged.com/student_blogs/becca/2007/09/24/hello-world/ http://www.passged.com/student_blogs/becca/2007/09/24/hello-world/#comments Tue, 25 Sep 2007 02:57:58 +0000 Becca Hi! My name is Becca Patterson, and I’m new at this. To tell you the truth, I’m not too good at computers. I used to be a truck driver, and I traveled all over the place. Maybe I’ll talk about some of the places I’ve been and stuff that I’ve done. You know, you learn alot by traveling around and meeting people. Anyways, that’s what I like, meeting people, getting out on the road.

But I guess that’s over for me! See, I threw out my back, pretty bad. No more driving for me! Now, I gotta figure out what I’m gonna do next. So, if you’ve got any ideas about good jobs for me… let me know!

Technorati Profile

Here’s the thing. I wasn’t no good in school. I had lots of trouble reading and just didn’t like it there. All that sitting in a desk and reading a book don’t sit too well with me. So I dropped out. And I earned a pretty good living driving, but now, I don’t even have a high school degree, and I can’t lift nothing or do anything physical because of my back.

Life is just like that. It throws stuff at you. You never know what’s gonna happen. Well, so now I need more options for what I’m gonna do. So, I’m studying to get my GED. Then, I’ll be able to do more stuff. (But what?!?)

I’ll try to put some GED problems from my life in the blog here, and maybe we can help figure them out together. Meanwhile, I’ll put in stuff that happens to me and some things that I did while I was traveling. See ya soon!

Becca

p.s. If you haven’t, check out passged.com. That’s where I got into my GED study program, and it’s pretty cool for someone like me.
