The work I was doing doesn’t pay the bills…
Name: Heather
Age: 33
City and State: Sweetwater, TN
What motivated you to get your GED? Throughout the years I have always kept a job. Although, not always the best kind of job, it was honest and I worked hard. Last year my life changed for the worst and I realized you can’t always depend on things to be perfect. Hard times have come and the work I was doing doesn’t pay the bills like it used to. My children motivate me to better my life and theirs.
How have your friends and family helped you? My children are my world. They motivate me to become better at everything I do, not only for myself but for them.
What problems have you faced? You know, I really thought I would have a hard time on math, but with the help of YouTube I’m getting by. The worst by far for me is Language. I just can’t seem to get the mechanics down. It drives me INSANE!!
What do you hope to gain from getting your GED? I hope to gain a sense of peace, knowing I finally was able to finish something. I also hope to better myself and my family. Getting my GED will give me more confidence, so I can go to college and begin a new life.
Heather,
You might be having trouble with learning language mechanics, but you’re able to write well… your writing is easy to follow, is free of confusing or serious errors, stays on topic, and has something to say! That means, you’ll be able to write a good, solid GED essay. Make sure you know what’s expected on the essay test, and try some practice essays in advance of the test. Raising your essay score by one point will take some pressure off your score on the multiple choice part of the language test. Also, you should be able to “hear” some of the problems on the multiple choice test (like wrong verbs, for example) and go with what “sounds right.” You’ve been using language all your life, so you know a lot more than you think. It might be helpful for you to take a practice test, and especially a Language Arts: Writing practice test, to see how you do and feel confident going into the exam.
You can do this! Let us know when you pass.
