Most people think if you drop out, you’re stupid…

Name: Kala
Age: 15
City and State: Northport, Al.

I about to be 16 years old. Most people think if you drop out, you’re stupid. Sometimes that might be the case but not in mine. I wanna drop out, get my GED, get a job, and go to college early. I would be going to college either way, so it’s actually not that bad as long as you do the right thing.

Reason for Leaving School: I want to when I turn 16 December 1.

Reason to Get a GED: I wanna go to college after I get my GED. I wanna be an ultrasound tech.

One Thing I Need for My Dreams: To set my mind to it.

Kala,

Hey, one thing we’re sure of… people drop out for a lot of reasons, but it never means they’re “stupid.” But The GED Academy never recommends that current high school students drop out. Sometimes, the extra preparation in the last years of school can help you a lot with college and life. We know you’re anxious to move forward, but this is a serious decision. We work with a lot of people who dropped out of school and then regretted it later. We’re very glad to hear that you want to go on to college, and that you’ve got a great career path in mind.

In Alabama, to take the GED when you’re 16, you’ll need your parents’ permission, in a notarized letter, as well a letter confirming that you’ve dropped out of school. (You can find more information about the GED in Alabama here: http://www.accs.cc/ged.aspx) So, you’ll need to talk with your parents. Maybe your parents have some good ideas to help you finish school. Try to listen to them, and maybe that will help them listen to your point of view, too. Think about all the reasons you want to drop out, and try to put them in perspective. This is your future, and you want to make the best decision possible.

Good luck!

Hey I feel the same way. I turn 16 this year and I have been thinking about geting my GED. I go to this Magnet school where I feel like everything that I am doing right now will just be repeated again in the first two years of college. But I have my own reserves about it. I feel like I might miss something important if I drop out. Do you feel the same? I hope that you follow your dreams and do what you want.

  2. Shakirah Hokett:

Im Gonna Be 16, on February 6, and im gonna drop out of school because i feel school is kinda dum to me and if i just get out of here and do something i want to, then my life will be better as usual. i mean i dont want to but i still can go back and do the work i could of did in school years ago.

  3. dystany:

im determined to do this and i dont want anyone to feel as if i cant! i have no luck with high school and yes because of that i am scared to leave high school and all the sudden have to grow up soo fast.. but the love of my life is outside of high school… and thats my career in my future.. i do not want to repeat another year.. becuase i feel as if i have to be controlled and like im un willing to grow.. i will be 18 in august by the way.. and having my own perspective and sticling to it.. makes feel like i can accomplish anything.. and i will.. i am not a high school drop and wont be known as one.. my future will be sucessful and i will do this.

  4. ELIZABETH MCDONALD:

I FEEL THE SAME WAY I AM TURNING 17 THIS YEAR AND I DON’T WANT TO MISS ANYTHING BUT I AM SO FAR BEHIND THAT I WANT OUT OF SCHOOL BUT I WANT TO GO TO COLLEGE AND LIVE MY LIFE IN THE RIGHT WAY WITH MY EDUICATION
IT IS SO HARD TO MAKE THE CHOICE BUT MAKE SURE IT IS SOMETHING YOU WANT TO DO AND SOMETHING YOU WILL BE HAPPY WITH

  5. katie:

my names katie, ive been in homeschooling for two years, because i failed 8th grade, and i refused to repeat it with my younger sister, i didnt think it would be fair on her part. i started late so they failed me again, making me be in 8th grade three times. i am sixteen this may, and i am still in 8th grade. it has nothing to do with how smart i am, because i am above average when it comes to how intelligent i am, i get told i am very mature for my age, and im ready to completely move on and start college. Once i turn 16 i am getting my GED and my permit, from there i’ll start community college for two years, and then go to pittsburg for culinary at there college. im not a drop out, i did not quit, or drop out and figure i’ll work at mcdonalds for the rest of my life, i chose to do what is best in my situation, and get ahead. this way i will be dont college when i am 20-24.

  6. Cidaboy:

I turn 16 this year i missed most of my 2nd yr of high school (well secondry school for me im brittish) and then i went back then i droped out again just over half a yr ago an hav’nt been since (very complecated problems) school doesn’t teach u common sense or how to guess acuratly what sum1 else is feeling they don’t teach u to talk or to feel or how to think logicly they just teach u stuff like math an u really only need to know +, x, – and deviding which u learn in primary school (or what eva amaricans call it lol) an u don’t really need to be gd at math unless u wanna be a shop keeper and they teach u english which just shows u how to write better an stuff u don’t need to as long as the person ur writing to gets the message, an useless stuff like history, any1 who sais sum1 is stupid cuz they missed a bit (or even alot) of school is stupid. i play the piano pretty well (top in my music class when i went which was weird cuz i was a naughty little fuker hehe) i play by ear an stuff, i just normally teach my self

  7. Shakirah Hokett:

  8. NDC:

Im 18 years old and its going to be my senior year soon. i failed 6th grade so i was technically supposed to have graduated by now. Im not Quitting at all. I wanna just get my GED and be done with high school. I don’t feel like i learn anything there. I already know half the stuff and i get bored hearing it over and over. I never do good in school cause i don’t do homework alot i guess…or its just testing. its cause its kinda bad at my house and im just stressed. I don’t think dropping out is bad unless you don’t plan on going to college. I just wanna get out! also if i drop out i can finally move in with my Fiance who lives 3 hours away and i will be able to get a job and get my ged. then go to college for art. As long as you have good plans for your life after you drop out its ok. Alot of famous people have GED’s too. look it up you will be suprised.

  9. paul dixon:

i dropped out in the 6th grade and im 16 i really need my ged :(

  10. Ashley Wood:

For starters, do not drop out. Half of the people on here are talking in slang. Although a lot of famous people have their GED doesn’t mean its right for you. You really need to think about your doing. I droped out my senior year at 18 because I was pregnant and I needed to find a job right away to provide for myself and son. I was in my senior year I’m currently working on my GED at the age of 19 and it is not easy. I live with the parents of my sons father and my soon to be husband. Just think about what your doing.

  11. angel boyd:

Yea i feel the same way. I am 18 right now.I’m a senior in high school. What made me feel that I want to recieve a GED is because my school is such a drag. It is a terrible school. You don’t basically learn anything there. They are too cheap to issue books. The discipline level is low. I plan on being a Pychologist or a family practitioner. If you put your mind to it, you will have a successful life.

  12. bob:

Well I was asked the same question today what do I do should I quit like everyone else around me or add least try to do something but its comlicated. But isnt that life its self so im just o a cloud right now

  13. Deion:

I FEEL LIKE DROPPING OUT IS NOT A BAD IDEA. I MEAN AS LONG AS YOU HAVE PLANS ON WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO DO.I DROPPED OUT AT 16 IN THE 8TH GRADE,NOW I WORKING ON GETTING MY GED.AFTER THAT I PLAN ON GOING TO COLLEGE TO GET MY CRIMINAL JUSTICE DEGREE.I WANT TO BECOME A STATE PATROL,OR A POLICE OFFICER.SO AS LONG AS U KNOW WHAT YOU WANNA DO ITS OK.I MEAN DONT JUST DROPPED OUT JUST BECAUSE YOU DONT LIKE SCHOOL THEY SAY HIGH SCHOOL IS THE BEST 4 YEARS OF YOUR LIFE AN I HATE I MISSED THAT.

Im working on my G.E.D. right now but im onley working on english, I just want to know if taking the G.E.D. is really hard or easy, because i really wanna go to college so please help me,comment if you want or e-mail me and tell me what you think about the G.E.D. thanks!!!!!!!!

  16. The GED Academy:

    Daniel,

If you’re 18, does that mean you would be graduating high school this spring? If that’s the case, wait for your diploma. You wouldn’t be able to enroll in college until next fall anyway.

Alternatively, if you’re not graduating this spring, you can always dual enroll in college classes that will give you credit for both college and high school if you want.

If you stay in high school, and keep your grades up, you’ll pass. If you drop out, then it’s ALL on the GED. If you fail even one test, you have nothing. On top of that, passing the GED tests is harder than finishing high school. I recommend you stay in school.

  17. michael:

Hello im 16 and i want to get my GED, i don’t necessarily want to drop out of high school but my current situation at home has made me decide that i want to drop out and get my GED to go to a culinary school to make somthing of myself and to get as far away from my family as possible as soon as possible does any one have any advice or experience you can share that i can benefit from? it will be greatly appreciated

  18. Brianna:

I’m 15 and getting held back, so this year i’ll be in 9th grade again. I have a learning disability. I’m on home school, and I still don’t learn. But when I want to, I can. When I turn 16 I’m going to drop out, and get my ged and go to college. I will only study for the ged. and stuff i’ll need to know for college. Everyone says its a bad idea but if I know what I want and have my heart set on it, then I can do it. (: Only drop out for good reasons. i’m also anti social, which is to hard for school.

  19. Max:

Im 17 years old and am currently in my fourth year of high school, for the past few days i have been highly considering dropping out and getting my ged. I would go straight to community college in my city, and earn 15 credits to be accepted into the airforce. The recruiter said that a ged with 15 college credits is the same as a high school diploma. I just cant see me doing 5 more months of this bull. Working an average of 45 hours a week (including weekends), i just dont have the time to worry about all the little assignments they give me.

  20. Krista:

I’m 16. I have been homeschooled since about the 6th grade. I really want to get my GED but in my state you have to be 18. (I live in Tennessee) I’m at 12th grade level in all of my classes and have pretty much done everything academically that I would do in public school but the only thing keeping me from being done is my age. I can’t get a highschool diploma unless I go to an actual school for three more school years. I want to go to cosmotolegy school and start doing hair. But I’d prefer to get this part of my life over with first. Every time we try to get information from people on what I should do they just say “you need to go back to school”. So I am wondering if any of you have any info. Like do you have to get your GED in the same state you live in and if not what states (preferably close to Tennessee) can you be 16. Or if you have found an alternative to the GED that’s the same equivalentcy to a GED or HSdiploma. Email me at Lilmamakcs@yahoo.com if you have any information. Thanks
