It’s Never Too Late for Your GED.

Name:      Steven
Age:     52
City and State:     Brentwood, MD

Well, it took place in Chicago Ill, when my mother took ill and brought me here to Washington DC and then left me to take care of myself. I had fear of going to school because I was fearful of my under age, that the school system would lock me up. Mind you at the time I was only 16, and didn’t want too go to jail.

So over the year I was able to find work and learn to keep my mouth closed and learn the the job well, from security to sales, and made more money than a person working as lawyer. And I took care of our three daughters over the thirty years. Then it dawned on me that our daughters had passed me in education. And before pass on I would like to complete this and go to college. Time is not on my side anymore.

Reason for Leaving School:  Well, my mother brought me here and took me out of school in Chicago and left me here!!!

Reason to Get a GED:  Knowing that this is one thing I need to do and seeing our daughters doing what we inform them it’s time for me to complete this for me. If I could run a security company for the government and schedule meetings for in house security… This will allow me to go the next step in my life, for an Associates and Bachelor in Business.

One Thing I Need for My Dreams:  Note it has been some time since I attend school and it would help me if I could do this online. For one reason, I have to work, and my wife doesn’t know of this after 35 years marriage. And it would break her heart after all this time that I kept something like this from her. So this is why it would help me.

Steven,

It’s never too late for your GED. You’ve been out of school for quite a while, so you’ll need some brushing up, but it won’t be too hard. You’ll likely be able to earn your GED in a few months, with the right course.

Although you can’t take the GED test online, you can study on line. You’ll just need a day to go to the test center and take the test. It would be easier if you could tell your wife what you’re doing, since she could help you make time to study and give you support when you need it. Are you certain that you can’t share this with her?

One good resource that will help you is the Maryland Adult Literacy Resource Center, who handles the GED for the Maryland Department of Education. Visit http://www.gogedgo.org/ for more information.

  1. Elaine:

I’m 49 years old and would like to know if there are any support groups available for people over 40 years old interested in preparing to take the GED.

I’m currently studying on my own and think it would be great to be paired with someone in a similar situation and be online support buddies for each other. I need a support buddy who I can interact via email with.
