My Dream: A Place for the Youth.

I am 38 years old, married with 4 children. I enjoy reading, cooking, and helping others. Most of the time I am just with my family. I left school because I was having a baby, and I did not return back to school.

I want to get my GED. I would like to go to college and study business. I would like to open my own bookstore / coffee shop, and it would be for the youth, a place where they can hang out at and read and learn, a place where they can stay off the street.

Having my GED would help me a great deal and would make my dream come true.

Sabrina,

What a great goal! And it sounds like you’ve got a good plan, a way to get what you want. You’ve also got a family around you, who can help and support you. The first step is your GED, and you’ve got a lot going for you. One important thing…you enjoy reading…and that means you’ve developed reading skills. That will help you pass much of the GED. One of the big focuses of the GED is reading a passage, and showing that you can understand it and think clearly about it. I’d recommend taking a practice test to find out how much studying you need to do, and in what areas. Chances are, you can pass some parts of the GED right away.

Many people find that they need to brush up on a few skills, and usually that includes math. Look for a good math program that you can fit into your life. The GED Academy offers a complete online study program that can help you pass (and boost your scores) in all areas of the GED. There are also local GED study programs available all over the country. The New York State Department of Education has a very useful GED website at http://www.emsc.nysed.gov/ged/. You can also check with your local library, community college, or adult education schools to locate programs in your area.

The GED is just the first step, and it’s very achievable. Let us know when you get your GED… and when you open that coffee shop!

A great route to college is your local community college. They’re not too expensive, you can qualify for financial aid, and you can get the preparation you need for the college you want to go to. Community colleges often have relationships with the 4-year colleges nearby, so you can easily take the right classes that will transfer to your 4-year degree. It’s worthwhile calling up your local community college and talking to a counselor there to see what your options are.
