Stories to motivate and inspire. . .

Afraid of failing. . .

My name is Elizabeth Lewis and I am a 37 year old woman who is seeking to pursue my GED. I have been thinking of doing this for quite some time now however allowed fear to get in the way. You see, I am afraid of failing for failing is what I’ve done best in my life. I have two boys 12 and 8 who has no clue of the fact their mom did not graduate from high school. I’ve done very well with jobs being able to work pretty decent jobs all my life however the fact of not finishing school haunts my mind everyday. I think of college majoring in psychology but with no high school diploma or GED it will always remain a thought and/or dream to me. I would love to make this dream a reality. As stated, my fear of failing has crippled me hindering me from going forth in my dream. Your advise and assistance would be greatly appreciated in helping me achieve my goal.

    Hi Elizabeth,

Don’t give up, this is year dream! Our dreams, can actually help generate the energy to keep going and fufill them.. Failure and then fear of failure becomes a cycle that can stop you . Please, don’t feed that belief about yourself. Failures don’t have dream, you do! Failures don’t get good jobs, you have them. Failures don’t have 2 great kids. How about letting them know? If you tell them, I’m sure it will lessen you feeling of shame. It is not a dirty seach. It is just one of the things that happened along the way, It’s in your past. You will probably decrease that feeling of failure if you talk to them honestly. It doesn’t need to be hidden. How about studting this couses along with them. Good luck, I know you can do it. Follow your dream!

I am also similar to what you are going through. I have two children and also need my ged. What you should try is to go to a junior college and see if they have the ability to benefit test. That should help you to be enrolled in college take basic classes and those credits could work towards your diploma or continue to go and earn your AA degree. I know that’s howit worked in Ca. My problem is I moved out of Ca to another state and my credits are not transferable and now I have to start all over again. I was four month away from recieveing my medical assistant and now I;m starting over.I can’t afford to go back

hi elizabeth, my name is amanda i am 24 and have two boys of my own. i dropped out of highschool 3 mnths before graduation. i was pregnate, and for years i kept saying i was gonna get my ged and never did because of fear of failing the test and looking stupid for not being able to do that either but, last year when i was pregnate eith me second son i decided enough was enough and sent off to the state and got my approval form and i am going to take the test the 29th of this month. I am still afraid of not passing but if i dont i will just try again and i will continue untill i pass because it is ultimately up to me to better myself not my kids, or my husband. my advice is to just do it, you have nothing to lose only a ged to gain.

My names Megan and i’m a high school drop out seeking my GED. I’m only 16 and I’m currently living with a friend of mine, because my step father and I never got a long. So my mom thought it would be best if I left. So now I’m just focused on getting my GED and getting my life started, as hard as that may be. I was wanting information on how to go about getting my GED, and some information on online courses. I was hoping I could study for it online and maybe even take the actual test online. I really need information and help so if there’s any information anyone can give me please let me know…

    Hello Megan,
Unfortunately it is not possible to take the GED tests online. But there are good study programs that will get you ready for the tests. The GED is a 7 1/2 hour set of five exams. Only 60% pass it the first time. Here is a short video about a online study program.
