GED Study Plan
Sherman's Five Easy Steps

Congratulations on your decision to go for your GED! Here's a simple five-step plan to get you started.

STEP ONE: TAKE AN ASSESSMENT TEST
The first step is to find out what you know and what you still need to learn. You may be surprised to find that you already possess enough knowledge to pass several of the tests with little or no preparation.

The best assessment tool is the Official GED Practice Test written by the same writers of the actual GED exam. Your scores from the Official GED Practice Tests can be easily converted to an actual GED test score so you can find out how you will do on the real GED before you take it. The Practice Test is half as long as the real GED test and includes the same types of questions as the real GED. CLICK HERE to get more information about the Official GED Practice Test.

STEP TWO: MAKE A STUDY PLAN
The next thing is to take the results of your assessment tests and make a workable study plan. Any test area in which you scored below 450 points will be the focus of your study. (The scores on the GED range from 200 to 800, with 450 a passing score.)

Your study plan should include:

  • Plenty of practice with GED type problems. We have found that the best way to prepare for the GED is to use the test problems as the primary focus of your learning. There are two reasons for this. First, the test problems help you identify what knowledge areas you need to work on, and secondly, the test problems give you practice with important critical thinking skills.

There are several sources for these problems. One is to sign up for our online GED courses CLICK HERE for more info on these. Another is to buy some study guides CLICK HERE for reviews of the study guides.

  • Study. Your assessment and practice with problems will identify areas of study you need to brush up on. There are several ways to find this material. Most of the study guides that have been written for the GED contain basic material in the study areas. Another way is to use passGED's Study@Home Program which contains online lessons in all the study areas. CLICK HERE for information about this program.

  • A study schedule. Make study time a priority in your life. Set aside a special time each day or week to work on your GED. Stick to it, and remember to give yourself some rewards for staying on schedule!
Persistence and consistency counts for a lot in studying for the GED. Haphazard study will lead to poor results on the test.

STEP THREE: IMPROVE YOUR TEST TAKING AND THINKING SKILLS
Know how to learn and study: Just knowing some basic tricks on improving your memory and how to study efficiently can take months off your preparation time. Denny Tillman’s book, How to Prepare for the GED contains several chapters on techniques to improve your learning, memory, and study skills. CLICK HERE for more information on this e-book.

Improve test taking skills : Knowing how to take a standardized test can improve your score by 15% or more. This may mean the difference between passing or not passing. The book How to Prepare for the GED by Denny Tillman contains several chapters on important test taking techniques. CLICK HERE for more information on this e-book.

Critical Thinking: The GED Test emphasizes communication, processing information, solving problems and using critical thought processes. Most of the problems on the GED test give you a passage containing all the information you need to solve the problem. From that, you are expected to make inferences, evaluations and analyses to find the correct answer. Learning basic critical thinking skills is absolutely necessary to pass the GED. PassGED online courses will help you improve your critical thinking skills through practice on actual GED type problems. CLICK HERE for more information on this book.

STEP FOUR: CHECK YOUR PROGRESS
Keep testing yourself using GED practice tests. Knowing where you are in your preparation will help you stay motivated.

You may use practice tests in the study guides or get more Official Practice Tests from passGED.com. There are five Official Practice Tests available (PA, PB, PC, PD, and PE). Two are listed on the website. If you need more, just write and we will send you purchase information.

STEP FIVE: TAKE THE TEST!
The last step is to find a test center to take the test. The real GED may not be taken online. CLICK HERE to find an official GED test center in your area.

Good luck on your GED,

Sherman
