GED Test Measures Basic High School Skills
The GED test is a standardized test to measure the skills required of high school graduates in the United States and Canada. The American Council of Education administers the GED tests several times during the year. The same GED test is given in all states and is considered an equivalent to a high school diploma.
GED Testing Includes Five Areas of Knowledge
The GED exam is a comprehensive seven-hour test in social studies, mathematics, science, and language arts, including both writing and reading. You are expected to be able to read, compute, interpret information, and express yourself in writing on a level comparable to that of 60 percent of graduating high school seniors in the United States.
GED Test Is Not About What You Know
The GED test expects you to apply basic skills to real-life situations. The GED test writers have gleaned the basic skills that were most important in high school and created problems for you to demonstrate your thinking and analytical skills. There is actually very little memorization knowledge required to pass the GED test. Rather, the GED test expects you to apply your thinking skills to real-life situations. The GED test is normed so passing requires a score better than 40% of graduating seniors with a high school diploma.
GED Preparation: How to Prepare for the GED Test
Your GED preparation should be concerned with three areas:
- A review and study of basic GED subject areas: math, science, social studies, reading, and writing.
- Practice with actual GED test questions in the test areas. GED practice tests are the most efficient way to learn the thinking skills that are expected on the GED test.
- Learn GED test taking skills, such as managing your time effectively during the test, how to improve your guessing ratio, and how to eliminate the wrong answers.
Who Writes the GED Tests?
The GED tests are developed using specifications established by experienced secondary school and adult educators and are reviewed by subject matter experts. Every GED test question is subjected to multiple reviews by GED test specialists and external content specialists, and is pre-tested before becoming part of a final test form. The GED tests are also standardized so that only 60% of graduating high school seniors can pass.
How Many Questions in the GED Test Do I Need to Get Right?
In order to pass the GED tests, the GED candidate must demonstrate a level of skill that meets or surpasses that demonstrated by approximately 60 percent of graduating high school seniors. Candidates generally need to answer 60 to 65 percent of the questions correctly.
Each correct answer in the GED test is worth one point. For each individual GED subject area, these points are totaled and then converted to a standard score, which ranges from 200 to 800. Candidates need a standard score of at least 410 in each of the GED subject areas in order to pass the GED test and an overall average score of 450 for the five-test GED battery.
