"I was scared of the test."

My name is Nicole Grant. I quit school in the 10th grade because I got pregnant. I got two daughters now almost ready for high school. It’s embarrassing that I didn’t finish high school.

I’ve been putting this off because it seemed way too hard. I was afraid of failing the test. A couple of years ago I tried some classes, but they were just like high school, actually worse. It looked like getting my degree was not going to happen.

What changed was my attitude. I’ve been telling my kids to do well in school and not let people’s attitudes hold them back. Then one day my oldest girl, Ashley, says to me, “Mom, you always telling us to be better. How come you didn’t get your diploma?”

She was right. My attitude was bad. I thought I couldn’t do it so I didn’t even try. I was still remembering how the teachers used to tell me I was not smart.

I’m not saying the studying for the GED was easy, but it was easier than I thought. I knew most of it already. When I took the first practice test I passed the social studies and science right away. Didn’t even need to study those.

So, now I have my GED and I feel good about myself. I just enrolled in nursing school. That’s been my dream all along.
