Interpreting Graphic Information

Visual information is an important element of students’ everyday life, and the GED Academy social studies course works to build students’ literacy with graphic information. Students learn to understand, interpret, and evaluate information using charts, graphs, and tables. Students also learn to think visually about signs, posters, photographs, and other images.

Understanding Words in Context

Vocabulary is a common stumbling block for adult learners who struggle to understand written materials. The GED Academy social studies lessons gives learners skills to read passages with unfamiliar words and comprehend meaning.

Constructing Meaning

GED Academy’s social science lessons teach important skills to help learners gain real meaning from the texts that they read. Students learn to understand and restate information, identify main ideas, summarize ideas, identify facts, recognize principles, understand point of view, and identify implications and make inferences. These skills help learners interpret information to gain relevant and valid knowledge.

Recalling Information

The foundational skill for interpreting and creating meaning from texts and graphic information is comprehension. By learning to recall information, students learn to absorb details and main ideas from their texts. GED Academy lessons teach summarizing and restating as key skills in recalling information.

Application

Students gain the application skills needed to solve problems and utilize information. GED Academy lessons provide skills for using information in new contexts, solving problems, identifying a principle or generalization, and applying principles and abstract ideas to problems and situations. Application skills allow students to truly use their knowledge.

Analysis

GED Academy lessons that teach analysis guide students in skills to think through problems. Learners gain experience with argumentation, including understanding conclusions and their support, as well as recognizing fallacies and assumptions. Learners also examine points of view of individual writers and among varying writers. GED Academy lessons also teach strategies for drawing conclusions, identifying patterns, understanding fact and opinion, recognizing unstated meanings or assumptions and making inferences, and identifying cause and effect.

Evaluating and Extending Meaning

GED Academy lessons help students compare ideas, assess the values of evidence and conclusions, make choices based on arguments, understand the role of values in beliefs and choices, and identify logical fallacies. Students learn tools to make good arguments, evaluate others’ arguments, and make strong decisions.

GED Social Studies Test Familiarity and Practice

The GED Academy courses include information and practice with the GED social studies test, including an overview of the social studies test and practice with important historical documents included in the GED social studies test. Students practice with numerous questions in the GED social studies format.
