So why teach everyone the same? The idea of putting twenty or thirty adult literacy learners in a single room and expecting them to learn at the same speed and in the same way simply doesn’t work.
The only advantage of teaching this way is cost. It’s cheaper to hire one teacher for a classroom of students than to hire a personal teacher for every student. It’s the only possible way for adult schools to afford teaching. The problem is, adult schools become an assembly line, and the student gets shortchanged.
How to give everyone a personal teacher?
In the past, the problem had no answer. Now, the answer is simple. It just hasn’t been recognized by an educational system that’s stuck in the old way of teaching. Educational technology has been around for decades. Some of it is good, but most of it just tries to mimic the teaching model of the classroom, with lectures and textbooks that treat all students the same.
