Review: If your background in science is weak this is the book to include in your study. Its strength is its completeness and examples of actual GED type questions. We highly recommend this book to candidates who need basic science instruction.


	GED Social Studies $18.95 Description: Steck Vaughn’s Ged Social Studies is a basic textbook in history and social studies issues for the GED. Includes a pre- and post-test GED test with analysis. Review: This is especially helpful for GED candidates who need a better understanding of U.S. history, government, as well as global issues and history. This is the text that is used in many GED prep courses. We recommend the text for basic preparation in social studies and critical thinking.


	30 Days to Change Your Life $15.00 Description: This journal is for people who want to change and improve their lives. Thirty Days to Change Your Life could be the beginning of a whole new life for you. It could help you change some bad habits you have been working on for years. Smart Thoughts For Stupid Moments might just become your best friend. Review: This is a great practical doitnow selfhelp book. Here’s a quote that says it all: “There’s no way to use this book incorrectly. You can’t fail. Everything you do, in whatever order you do it, will help you. I have tried to arrange the book in logical order and you just might want to start at the beginning and plow through. Or you might simply go straight to any section that draws you. It’s a good opportunity to listen to yourself and honor what you hear.”


	Master the GED, 2009 $23.95 Description: The book starts with tips and suggestions on taking tests and study. Part II is a diagnostic test for determining readiness for the GED. It includes answers and explanations as well as an analysis to guide the student in their study. The bulk of the book includes reviews in each of the GED study areas: Science, Math, Reading, Social Studies and Writing. The book ends with two complete practice tests including both answers and explanations. Review: This book is well thought out and executed. It is thorough and would definitely help the GED candidate prepare. The diagnostic test is complete and will help the candidate identify the areas they need to work on. The instruction sections, which make up the bulk of the book are somewhat superficial. The math review reminds us of high school textbooks, shudder. The book teaches by experience, by doing problems and finding out what the answer is. This is a good method for students who are far enough along in their preparation to not need work on basic skills and knowledge. The two practice tests are thorough and the explanations are clear and helpful. Overall, this is a good study guide and compares well with others.


	Cracking the GED, 2009 $18.95 Description: The book starts with a 60page introduction about the GED that is helpful, although limited in scope. It is then divided into six instruction sections that explain how to crack each of the six GED tests. The instruction sections offer a short course in writing, reading, science, math, and social studies. They are effective reviews for the student who has a good background in high school skills, but needs a quick refresher. The last section of the book includes two practice tests. Review: Overall, the book is worthwhile, but will not drastically improve your test score. We like the light reading style it tries to make the preparation fun and doable.This is a good review book for someone who just needs a quick refresher of the basics. It does not provide a thorough background instruction for those GED candidates who have forgotten basic high school knowledge and skills. The practice tests are good, but do not convert the scores to a real GED score.


	Barron’s GED 2008-2009 -- How to Prepare for the GED $21.95 Description: Updated to reflect the recent major changes in the high school equivalency exam, this manual presents a fulllength diagnostic test with answer keys, answer analyses, and selfappraisal charts. The diagnostic is followed by reviews of all GED test subjects, which emphasize proficiency in highschool level math, reading comprehension, and writing skill, as well as knowledge of social studies, arts, and literature. The CDROM packaged with this book offers a computerized practice GED with automatic scoring plus additional subject review material. Review: A book like this is useful for the person whose background knowledge is limited either because they did not complete High School past the tenth grade or for the person who is their mid to late twenty’s, or older, and cannot remember much of what they learned in High School. The CDROM is the weakest part of the book. It contains practice tests and some study material. It is often hard to navigate and seems to be a pretty weak supplement. For the extra money it does not seem worth it. More of a marketing gimmick than a real help to preparation, in my opinion.


	McGrawHill’s GED Short Course & Contemporary’s Essential GED $12.95 Description: The book contains both a pretest and posttest for the GED as well as instruction in all the five subject areas. It includes a section on critical thinking skills and a good review of math and Basic English Usage. The instructional sections are limited in their scope but include many GED type questions to guide the learning. The McGrawHill Short Course and The Essential GED are the same book published by two divisions of McGrawHill Review: This is a good review book for someone who has a pretty good grasp of basic high school skills but needs a quick refresher before taking the GED. The book is easy to read and navigate and includes basic knowledge in all the subject areas. It is a scaled down version of the much bigger McGrawHill GED book and does not contain the depth of background knowledge.


	Essential Words for the GED $8.95 Description: This vocabulary builder helps test takers strengthen the vocabulary they already have, sharpen knowledge of prefixes, suffices, and compound words, add new words to their personal word bank, and become aware of those little words that good readers never miss. A list of 400 words essential to success on the GED is given with exercises and solutions. Review: Strengthening vocabulary is one of the keys to improving reading skill and crucial to passing the GED. We have found this book one of the best at building vocabulary and basic English usage. It is especially helpful to GED candidates who have find reading challenging because their vocabulary is limited.
